Pawprints in the Park is an annual event created by Footprints in Brisbane in conjunction with RSPCA QLD designed to help homeless and disadvantaged people have greater access to pet care. The event first began in 2012 and is based on the acknowledgement of the importance of pets in the live of those that experience social and financial disadvantage. This event allows them to access vet checks and care products without sacrificing their own needs in order to look after their pets.

International studies have shown that the majority of people experiencing homelessness have experienced significant trauma and find pet ownership highly therapeutic. They also show that pet ownership can give people a sense of purpose and responsibility.

We would love to see Brisbane embrace the notion that all people  are entitled to pet ownership, whether homeless or not and that pet ownership should not be a barrier to accommodation and support.

Pets will be given free vet checks and vaccinations, worming and flea treatment, pet products and blankets, as well as access to local community organisations. Owners will be required to provide a Centrelink pension card to determine eligibility.

For more information on how you can be involved please contact Footprints on (07) 3252 3488.

“A pet brings warmth, when ones life is cold, they bring comfort in times of despair, they provide meaning, and in turn, bring an active purpose to each day.”
