A Home Away from Home - Centre Based Activities at Footprints

The Encarta Dictionary describes “Respite” as a brief period of rest and recovery between periods of exertion or after something disagreeable.   It is also known by most as an opportunity to take a breather, take timeout, to relax, enjoy, or visit.

It goes without question that caring for someone can be fulfilling.  But it can also be physically and emotionally demanding, particularly day after day with no breaks or help from others.   This can be harmful in the long terms for both the caregiver and the cared for.

Respite care through a program such as Centre Based Activities offers caregivers temporary relief from caregiving responsibilities, a chance to take a breather, relax and recharge.  The Program also allows for those living alone to socialise in a safe and supported environment.

Without breaks from the everyday responsibilities of caregiving, stress, resentment and depression can result.  When living alone, interaction with others enjoying a laugh, conversation and a beautiful home-cooked meal will ease those feelings of isolation and provide you with an avenue to seek support if needed.  We may not be family, and this might not be as familiar as your own home, but we can assure a friendly and caring experience each time you visit our Centre.   Our focus is on providing the opportunity to participate in activities of your choice; activities that suit your individual needs and interests, and perhaps even try something new.

Home is often the place we feel we best belong, whether it’s where we were born, where we lived most of our lives, or even where we find ourselves now.    CBA aims to achieve a “home-like” environment for clients attending on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays.   Familiar background music, tablecloths, home-cooked meals shared with friends, laughter, concern, and a listening ear are all part of our aim to provide a home-away-from-home.
