Art Exhibition and Silent Art Auction

“Art enables us to lose ourselves and find ourselves at the same time”. This quote by Thomas Merton is so apt when discussing the incredible benefits of art, and art therapy, to those who are struggling with mental illness.

Footprints in Brisbane work with those in our community who are vulnerable and requiring support to allow them to live their lives in the way that they choose. The Art Therapy groups that are facilitated through Footprints, allow artists to gain self-confidence and encourage the development of social interaction skills. The facilitators of the groups are both professional artists with a passion for sharing the benefits of the medium and have a strong commitment to community development.

There is an insecurity that is felt by many who suffer from mental illness and art is the ultimate expression of themselves, allowing them to break outside of the barriers. Following the art group, which runs for around three months, Footprints hosts the Annual Art Exhibition and Silent Auction from 5.30pm – 8.30pm at 14 Proe Street Newstead 4006.

The art exhibition is a significant FREE event in the local calendar, displaying and auctioning over 150 artworks and being attending by over 250 guests from the community. Beverages and canapes will be served while the artwork is browsed and silent auction bets are made. There will also be alive art element, giving guests the opportunity to see the artists at work.

There is a sense of excitement and anticipation in the lead up to the exhibition as the artists prepare their works, and from the facilitators, who are filled with pride when they see the journey that the artists have made, both physically and mentally.

This year, there is also a really exciting project running alongside the exhibition, to coincide with the Footprints 25 Year Anniversary Celebrations.

Footprints are launching the ART FROM THE HEART Postcard Competition, inviting local artists to create a piece in a two dimensional media. The competition originated out of a desire to continue to foster strong community engagement and inclusiveness, two concepts that are at the core of the Footprints philosophy.
